Mike Witcher on the bakery

Mike Witcher on the bakery

Having heard that the bakery would be operating over the July school holidays, my wife and I organised a trip, Lyndhurst on Friday 4th, visit Farina and bakery on Saturday, thence to Hawker for the night. The bakery wasn't open, so we did a return trip on Sunday morning, before a lunch appointment in Pt Augusta. The pasties and bread was worth the trip. On the website attractions section, mention is made of Tom Kruse and how no-one in Marree knows how he became Tom. As a lad he earned the nickname Tom when he hung round with a rag and bone man Tom Poole (from Mailman of the Birdsville Track, his biography by Kristen Weidenbach page 9). The Mail Truck in Marree was, in fact obtained from the Wirrulla Council for the 1986 re enactment and Leyland Cub recovery by one Dave Burge who was involved in that and the 1999 re-enactment. Tom actually drove the Blitz for the 1986 event and was seen on the TV programme. The woman sitting on the load behind the cabin was Margaret Metzger (nee Dack) of Quorn.
I have made myself known to Dave Linn and looking forward to volunteering in 2015
