Farina School
Cnr North Terrace and West Terrace, Farina, SA
With the appointment in early October 1879 of Mary Hall by the Minister of Education as the first School Teacher assigned to Farina, it appears that teaching was to soon to get underway. The permanent school building at Farina was still some years away, however on October 10th 1879, Mary Hall commenced teaching and that day sent a Telegram to the Inspector General of Schools declaring the Farina school open.
In 1880, school teacher Matilda Henery wrote to the Inspector General of Schools regarding her search for a room to rent to conduct school classes. She reported that she couldn't locate another room beside the "Assembly Hall" where classes had been conducted to date.
It seems that a room was rented within the township for the school up until 1887 when the permanent school was built. Teacher Thomas Hart wrote to the Inspector General of Schools in January 1887 advising that the current annual rental had been 20 pounds per annum, and the room would be available for 4 pounds per month on a monthly basis, as the permanent school was nearing completion.
The tender for building the permanent Farina School was awarded to Moran Bros of Port August in April 1887. It is not certain at this point when the school was completed and put to use.
By 1889 it appears that student numbers were growing and the first of the building changes were made with the addition of a shelter shed. However by 1891 there was further unrest from the Teacher, Students and Parents with overcrowding and the lack of proper sanitary facilities at the school, and a further tender was awarded to build a toilet and make additions to the building.
The following list of Teachers who taught at Farina is substantially complete however will be updated as further research is undertaken.

The Farina School is located on lots 385, 386, 431 and 432 of the Township of Farina at the corner of North Terrace and West Terrace.
Interestingly, the land title document available (Title CT 759/147) was created in 1907, even though the school building was erected on the site in 1887.
The SA Government Gazette proclaimed the allocation of the land on the 17th April 1878 for the purposes of a school.

The following documents were uncovered from various sources such as Trove and the SA State Archives, and have been used to piece together the history of the Farina School.
